Practical answers to the questions facility managers, engineers and asset owners typically ask before engaging an industrial drone inspection contractor.
What types of assets does Miles Away Aerial inspect?
Industrial, infrastructure, marine, offshore and commercial assets — tanks, pressure vessels, flare stacks, pipe racks, structural steel, bridges, towers, jetties, seawalls and commercial roofs. The engineering background is petroleum and offshore oil and gas, applied across the broader industrial sector. If your asset isn't listed, ask directly.
Can live assets be inspected without a shutdown?
Many suitable visual capture scopes can be completed while assets remain operational, subject to site controls, permits and approvals. Drone work can reduce reliance on scaffolding, rope access or EWPs for appropriate external visual inspection tasks.
What CASA approvals and credentials are held?
CASA RePL (Remote Pilot Licence) and ReOC (Remote Operator's Certificate). Credentials held include a Bachelor of Petroleum Engineering (UNSW), MIEAust (Engineers Australia), BOSIET, MSIC, CA-EBS, OGUK offshore medical, Thermography Level 1 (IPI Learning), and a Rail Industry Worker (RIW) card. Insurance held: $20M public liability and $20M professional indemnity.
What sensors and platforms do you operate?
Enterprise-grade DJI platforms with interchangeable payloads: high-resolution optical with telephoto zoom for visual inspection, radiometric thermal (640×512) for thermography, and LiDAR where a point-cloud scope is required. RTK and PPK mapping includes documented accuracy checks; licensed surveyor coordination is available where certified survey output is required.
What deliverables do you provide?
Annotated observation photo registers (asset-keyed), geo-located thermal anomaly reports, orthomosaics (GeoTIFF), point clouds (LAS / LAZ), 3D photogrammetric models (OBJ / FBX / GLB), field condition summaries for client or engineer review and repeat-inspection comparison records. Output formats are agreed up-front to fit your asset register or CMMS.
How long does a typical inspection take?
On-site capture is typically 1–4 hours for many single-asset scopes and can reduce setup time compared with rope access or EWP methods. Reporting turnaround is usually 3 business days for standard scopes. Multi-day campaigns for large industrial sites are scoped as required.
Are you insured?
$20M public liability insurance and aviation insurance. Certificates of currency supplied to clients prior to mobilisation. NDAs and confidentiality agreements available on request — most industrial clients require them and we accommodate.
How is data security handled?
Captured data is delivered by secure cloud delivery, controlled file sharing or another delivery method agreed with the client. Raw imagery retention and deletion timing are agreed as part of the scope. Strict confidentiality agreements are honoured throughout the engagement.
Is offshore work covered?
Yes. Offshore credentials include BOSIET, CA-EBS, OGUK offshore medical and MSIC, supported by direct offshore drilling-supervisor experience. Offshore drone scopes are quoted on a per-project basis subject to operator approvals and scheduling.
What does an inspection cost?
Cost depends on scope, asset complexity, location, deliverable format and reporting depth. A short single-asset capture starts at a few hundred dollars; a multi-day offshore campaign runs into the tens of thousands. Send a brief and you'll get a written quote, typically same business day.
What do we need to prepare on-site?
Standard site induction for our crew, a designated safe take-off and landing zone, and the relevant site permits. We manage all aviation compliance and airspace approvals remotely through AVCRM before mobilisation. We are entirely self-sufficient on-site — power, weather monitoring, ground-station setup and all aviation paperwork.
What happens in bad weather?
Drone operations are weather-dependent. High winds, heavy rain or poor visibility compromise data quality and safety. We monitor local conditions through AVCRM flight planning. If conditions are unsuitable, we reschedule at no additional cost.
Can operations be carried out at restricted or sensitive sites?
Yes — within CASA-approved operating envelope. ReOC-covered, security-cleared (MSIC) operations. Coordination with site security, restricted-airspace authorities and operator permitting systems is part of standard pre-mobilisation. NDAs and security protocols accommodated.
Why drone inspection over traditional methods?
Drone inspections can reduce personnel-at-height exposure, shorten setup time for suitable visual scopes, and produce repeatable data that compares year-on-year. They are not a replacement for hands-on NDT, engineers or specialist inspectors, but they are a strong screening and documentation tool for many external visual inspection tasks.
